Many of us spend hours sitting each day without giving it much thought. But research suggests that long, uninterrupted periods of sitting may do more than slow your metabolism. They could also increase your risk of dying from cancer. Now, a new study suggests it's not just how much you sit that matters, but how often you get up and move.
The study included more than 91,000 adults from a large UK health database. Participants wore wrist activity monitors for seven consecutive days so researchers could accurately measure their activity levels and sedentary time. Over the next 12 years, the team examined whether people who regularly interrupted long periods of sitting had a lower risk of cancer death than those who typically remained seated for at least 30 minutes at a stretch.
To distinguish between sitting patterns, the researchers defined prolonged sedentary behavior as sitting for at least 30 minutes without meaningful movement. Sitting time was considered interrupted when participants stood up or moved around before 30 minutes had passed.
The findings suggest that long periods of uninterrupted sitting can significantly impact cancer risk. Every additional hour spent sitting continuously was linked to a 10% increase in cancer mortality. In contrast, replacing some of that time with movement offered measurable benefits. One hour of light activity lowered the risk by 12%, 30 minutes of moderate activity reduced it by 8%, and just five minutes of vigorous activity was associated with a 22% lower risk of cancer death.
This study adds to growing evidence that uninterrupted sitting may be more harmful than previously thought. The good news is that making this habit doesn't require a major lifestyle change. Try standing up and moving regularly throughout the day, whether it's taking a short walk, using the stairs, or simply stretching between tasks. These small activity breaks may provide lasting health benefits and could help lower your risk of cancer.
