The gut microbiome is the community of trillions of bacteria, fungi and viruses that primarily live in the colon. These tiny organisms help digest food while producing compounds that can influence many aspects of both physical and mental health. Researchers have uncovered a link between specific gut bacteria and biological aging, adding to growing evidence that the gut microbiome may affect how we age.
The study discovered that the differences accounted to about 15% in biological aging that could be traced to variations in the gut microbiome. These findings indicate that the bacteria and other microbes living in the gut may provide valuable insight into how fast the body is aging beneath the surface.
The analysis included 123 adults representing a broad range of ages. Blood and stool samples were collected to compare the composition of the gut microbiome with blood-based biomarkers that estimate biological aging. These biomarkers provide a picture of how quickly the body is aging biologically, which may differ from a person's actual age.
A clear relationship emerged between gut bacteria and DunedinPACE, a blood-based test that estimates how quickly the body is aging biologically rather than simply measuring a person's age in years. Higher levels of Bifidobacterium adolescentis were associated with slower aging, whereas Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens showed a faster aging rate.
Because the gut microbiome is constantly shaped by diet, lifestyle, the environment and other everyday influences, it may offer opportunities to support healthier aging. Although more research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms, these findings could eventually help guide more personalized strategies for promoting long-term health and wellness. They also highlight how daily habits and life experiences may influence the aging process over time.
