Because of this close connection, a slower walking pace may be one of the earliest signs of cognitive decline, making walking speed a valuable indicator of brain health.

To investigate the link between walking speed and brain health, researchers examined data from three long-term studies involving nearly 4,000 adults aged 80 and older who showed no signs of dementia when they entered the studies. Participants were grouped according to their natural walking pace, with those who walked the fastest classified as "super movers" and the rest as "non-super movers." The researchers evaluated cognitive function using standard memory and thinking tests and assessed brain health through MRI scans and, in some cases, postmortem examinations for dementia-related changes.

The study found that faster walkers had healthier brains and were about half as likely to develop cognitive decline. They also performed better on cognitive tests even when their brains showed similar dementia-related changes as slower walkers, suggesting a greater ability to resist the effects of aging. Because walking relies on many body systems working together, a brisk walking pace may be a simple but powerful indicator of long-term brain health.

The findings suggest that something as simple as a person's normal walking pace may offer important insights into brain health later in life. Researchers still need to determine whether increasing walking speed can help prevent cognitive decline, but measuring gait speed may become an easy way to identify people who could benefit from earlier evaluation and strategies to help keep their brains healthy.
