Can the Brain Recover from Years of Unhealthy Eating?

Some decline in memory and cognitive function is a natural part of aging. The good news is that healthy habits such as eating a nutritious, brain-friendly diet, can help keep your mind sharp. However, while improving your diet may boost cognitive function and support long-term brain health, it may not completely undo the effects of years spent eating foods high in sugar and fat.

A new study in rodents suggests that adopting a healthier diet after consuming a high-fat, high-sugar diet may improve memory, but may not fully erase the damage. The research adds to mounting evidence that ultra-processed foods can have long-lasting effects on cognitive function.

To investigate whether the effects of unhealthy eating can be reversed, researchers examined 27 rodent studies in which animals were fed high-fat, high-sugar diets for 14 days before some were switched to a healthier diet. The studies assessed memory, motivation, movement, and behaviors such as anxiety and depression following the dietary intervention.

Researchers found that the rodents that had transitioned to a healthy diet showed better memory performance than those that continued eating an unhealthy diet. Although memory improved, it did not reach the level seen in rodents that had consistently eaten a healthy diet.

Memory recovery varied by diet type, occurring in animals previously fed high-fat diets but not in those exposed to high-sugar diets or diets high in both fat and sugar. The dietary change also failed to produce significant improvements in measures of anxiety, depression-like behavior, motivation, or physical activity.

These results should not be interpreted as evidence that brain function cannot recover. Instead, they suggest that preventive strategies may be more effective than restorative ones. The findings reinforce the importance of dietary quality, as prolonged exposure to unhealthy diets may produce persistent alterations in memory-related neural pathways.
