Most people who take a multivitamin do so without firm proof of its value, which makes it important to build a clearer picture of its potential contributions to health. Recent research indicates that older adults who took a daily multivitamin experienced a modest slowdown in biological aging.
While your chronological age is just a count of years lived since birth, biological age reveals the true condition of your body by tracking cumulative damage and changes at the cellular and molecular levels.
The findings came from a two-year randomized clinical trial involving nearly 1,000 healthy older adults, with an average age of 70. The effect was more pronounced among participants who started the study with accelerated biological aging relative to their chronological age, suggesting greater potential benefits for those already showing faster cellular wear.
Participants were randomly assigned into four groups: daily multivitamin-multimineral plus cocoa extract, cocoa extract and a placebo, multivitamin-multimineral and a placebo, or double placebo. Blood was collected and analyzed from all participants at enrollment and at the 12- and 24-month mark throughout the trial.
Compared to the placebo group, those taking the multivitamin showed about four months less cellular wear and tear, as measured by five epigenetic clocks tracking DNA methylation patterns.
There's enormous public interest to understand if commonplace supplements can truly mitigate aging, and this study supplies some of the most rigorous and believable evidence to emerge so far. Future follow-up research is planned to determine if the reduced pace of biological aging, as detected by the epigenetic clocks, persists once the trial period ends.
